What I said to America on the radio this morning

Hi everyone -

This morning, I had the distinct privilege and honor of delivering the weekly Saturday morning Democratic Radio Address to the nation following President Bush's radio address.

The address aired across the country on all the major radio networks, including ABC, NPR, CBS Radio, CNN Radio, C-SPAN, the Armed Forces Radio Network, and the Voice of America Radio Network.

DEMOCRATIC RADIO ADDRESS
December 30, 2006

Good morning and Happy New Year. This is Congressman-elect Jerry McNerney of Pleasanton, California, a new Member in the 110th Congress.

As we move into the New Year and the new Congress, I am excited about what we can achieve for the American people. In this election, the American people clearly called for change: change in the way we do business in Washington, change in the way that we shape our energy policy, and most importantly, a change of direction in Iraq.

As our first responsibility in fulfilling the mandate of this critical election, House Democrats will restore integrity and civility in Washington in order to earn the public trust.

We will ban gifts from lobbyists and lobbyist-funded travel, prohibit the use of corporate jets, and shut down the revolving door between Capitol Hill and K Street Lobbyists. We will restore the House tradition of allowing a reasonable 15-minute voting period to prevent extended votes, and we will require that Congress put away the credit card and operate under pay-as-you-go common sense budget rules. We will hold Members of Congress accountable to the people who voted them into office, not lobbyists and special interests.

Our heavy dependence on foreign oil is putting our economy, our climate, and our national security at great risk. We are actually funding the very terrorists around the world who are trying to harm us. It's our patriotic duty as citizens of this great nation to end our dependence on imported oil. Democrats will quickly and significantly reduce our consumption of foreign oil while creating jobs, prosperity, and a healthy environment with a new energy technology, including renewable energy and bio-fuels.

Most of the technologies needed to reshape our energy future are already at hand; what has been lacking is the political will to develop and expand their use. Democrats have a vision of creating a new energy economy using good old-fashioned American ingenuity to achieve energy independence. New American jobs and a bright future will be the dividend.

Democrats will also lead the way for a new direction in Iraq. My son was in the military when he convinced me to run for office, and we continue to keep our soldiers and their families in our prayers. But our troops need more than our well-wishes, and our veterans need more than lip service; we need a change in policy, as confirmed by the Iraq Study Group report released earlier this month.

I share the concern of my Democratic colleagues that President Bush may use his same failed logic to increase our troop strength in Iraq by up to 30,000 soldiers. The incoming chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, Ike Skelton, has said that an increase in troops at best won't change a thing, and at worst could exacerbate the situation even further in Iraq.

The Iraqis need to understand that the responsibility for the future of that country is theirs. Beginning the redeployment of American forces would send that message. We must also improve the training of Iraq security forces by ensuring that Iraqi units are not infiltrated by either militia members or insurgents. The consequences of not doing so are unacceptable. In my district there is a Gold Star mom whose son was killed in Iraq by the very Iraqis he was training. He and his mom are always in my thoughts. We simply can not ask our young men and women to train Iraqis without doing everything possible to make certain that the people they are training are not attacking our troops.

Our troops have done everything asked of them in Iraq with great courage. Particularly at this time of the year, when families gather to celebrate the holiday season, we need to remember the huge sacrifices being made by the brave men and women in our military, and give thanks for their service.

Thank you for listening. I wish everyone the very best 2007 and pray that God blesses you and your families for this holiday season. This is Congressman-elect Jerry McNerney.

What are your thoughts?

As you know, I like to read your comments and feedback, so let me know what you think by posting a comment below. I will try to post a reply as soon as possible!

Meanwhile, in five short days, I will be sworn into office as your representative in California's 11th Congressional District. Always remember that without you, none of this would be possible. As I take the oath of office, please know that you will be there with me in spirit and in our shared commitment to bring real change to Washington.

I am looking forward to serving you in Congress.

Happy New Year to you, your friends and your family.

Catching up with the Congressman-elect

Curious about how Congressman-elect McNerney is gearing up for his first full term in the House of Representatives?

'Mr. Smith' home from Washington
Congressman-elect already looking toward next run in '08

By Rachel Gordon, Chronicle Staff Writer

The words were like gold to Jerry McNerney, the Democratic congressman-elect from Pleasanton who beat a powerful GOP incumbent and is back in his district briefly before he takes the oath of office.

"I'm not old enough to vote for you,'' Ryan Rubin, a 17-year-old Foothill High School student, told McNerney at a fundraiser Friday night in Pleasanton, "but I'll be old enough to vote for you in two years."

McNerney, who won by six percentage points, wants to hold on to his margin. But Rubin's remarks, made in a short receiving-line conversation, also served as a reminder of the pressure he'll face as a U.S. representative.

Election comes around every two years, and right after you win one, you have to start running again. There already are stirrings of Republicans, whose party holds a voter registration advantage in the district, gearing up to take on McNerney in the next round...

McNerney has high hopes for transit
Incoming congressman's $2.6B vision: BART extension to Tracy

By Erik N. Nelson, Staff Writer

DUBLIN — Incoming Rep. Jerry McNerney hasn't even taken his seat on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and he's already thinking big.

At a groundbreaking at Dublin City Hall on Friday for a $9 million traffic management project for the Tri-Valley, McNerney said he hoped to secure federal money for a BART extension down the middle of Interstate 580 — all the way to Tracy.

"BART to Livermore and Tracy — these are things that I'm very interested in," said McNerney, a Democrat who Nov. 7 wrested the 11th Congressional District from Rep. Richard Pombo, R-Tracy. As a member of the committee, McNerney added, "I will have the opportunity to bring projects to our area."

McNerney, whose new district comprises much of San Joaquin County and includes the Interstate 680 corridor in Alameda County and part of Contra Costa County, said improving links such as I-580 and BART "fits into my plan to bring economic development to San Joaquin County."...

From Congressman-elect Jerry McNerney: "You're invited to a new era (and a holiday party!)"

First, let me thank you for the wonderful comments and congratulations you have sent to me since I was elected to Congress on November 7. Words can not express the gratitude I have for your incredible outpouring of support.

Holidaybutton2_1 It's been an amazing few weeks since that historic day. I've spent a great deal of time in Washington and here at home getting oriented to the honor of representing you as well as working with our new Democratic leadership to advance a new agenda for America. I am so excited about the future and what we can do together in the coming years -- including transforming our district into the "Silicon Valley of new energy technology".

I would like to celebrate this new era with you at a Holiday Party on either December 15 and 16. But, even if you can't attend one of these celebrations, please continue to read this very important message.

To find out where the Holiday Parties are and to RSVP, please click here:

In the last few weeks, my finance team has been calculating the cost of our campaign for change. You'll be happy to know that we exhausted every cent of your generous contributions to win. Not one penny was spared -- in fact, despite being vastly outspent by an entrenched incumbent, we raised and spent over $2 million to win this seat for the people.

Your small contributions, averaging less than $200, were the fuel for this unprecedented people-powered win -- the ONLY congressional defeat of an incumbent in California and the ONLY congressional defeat of a powerful committee Chair in the House of Representatives.

But, as expected, we did incur some campaign debt. Just over $69,000, as of the last report. And now, to close the books on 2006, launch our new campaign to win in 2008, and realize our vision for the district and the nation, we need to eliminate that campaign debt before January 1.

You can help me by either:

1) Attending one of our Holiday Parties on December 15 or 16,

OR

2) Simply contributing whatever amount you can afford at:

http://www.jerrymcnerney.org/contribute_holiday06.asp

Even if you can NOT attend a Holiday Party, please click the link above and then, when asked to RSVP, simply click "None -- I'm just contributing". Any amount that you can afford is welcome!

While we may have spent slightly more than we raised to win, it was obviously an investment in the future of America. From broadcast advertisements to on-the-ground field organizing in every corner of the district, we did everything we could to empower our grassroots volunteers to victory on Election Day.

You have been there for me every step of the way and I hope that you can find a way to help us once again. Please help me reduce our campaign debt today so we can get started on changing the direction of America tomorrow!

It doesn't take much. Whether it's $20 or $2,000, please contribute what you can today at:

http://www.jerrymcnerney.org/contribute_holiday06.asp

Remember, even if you can't attend a Holiday Party, simply click "None -- I'm just contributing".

Again, I thank you for your steadfast support. When the pundits and power-brokers said I would not be able to defeat an entrenched incumbent who outspent me nearly 2-to-1, you believed otherwise. Without you, this historic victory would not have been possible.

And now, we are going to Congress. Together.

Happy holidays to you and your friends, family and loved ones.

P.S. Stay tuned for future communications regarding some exciting new initiatives and events. Things are moving on many fronts, and as soon as the details are firm, I will alert you via email.

P.P.S. I would love to talk with you about our agenda for change in the coming year and what you think it will take to achieve that agenda. The best opportunity to talk in the next few weeks will be at one of our Holiday Parties on December 15 and 16.
