Republicans for McNerney: McCloskey and Benigno Stand Behind Jerry

It’s not often that lifelong Republicans endorse a Democrat in a congressional race that could change the balance of power in the House of Representatives. At Wednesday’s press conference at McNerney headquarters, however, former Republican primary candidates Pete McCloskey and Tom Benigno decided to place their country above their party.

Communicating the frustration of so many patriotic Republicans who are troubled by Richard Pombo’s corruption, McCloskey and Benigno told the assembled throng on Wednesday that they believe Jerry McNerney is ready to restore honesty, integrity and accountability to Washington.

“You know, I never really thought I’d be doing this. I’ve been a Republican for 57 years. My family have been Republicans for four generations,” said McCloskey. “But I’ve concluded two things: Jerry McNerney is an honest man; Richard Pombo is not. I’m confident that Jerry McNerney is an honorable man who will vote his conscience.”

Former Republican congressional candidate Tom Benigno announced his endorsement for Jerry as well and talked about what it means for two prominent Republicans to stand behind Jerry McNerney.

"I have been a Republican all of my life, but Richard Pombo and his leadership have lost touch with us, and it's time for the corruption to end,” said Benigno. “I believe that this particular venue today -- Mr. McCloskey and I being here -- sends out a clear message to the people. I think the message is: we need change. We need change and I think the people are ready for it.”

If you've been following this race, you already know that people are inspired by Jerry's campaign to take down Pombo and take back Congress. On Wednesday, Jerry demonstrated his commitment to make that change a reality in November.

“We now have a choice,” said Jerry. “Do we want more of Richard Pombo protecting Big Oil or do you want to join me and start down a path that leads to energy independence and clean air? Do you want a congressman who continues to subsidize Big Oil or do you want someone who’s going to stand up and demand that the oil companies actually pay their fair share?”

“Here in the 11th district, do we want to continue to send Richard Pombo to Washington to cut shady deals that make him and his powerful friends richer, or do we want to restore honesty, integrity and accountability to Congress?”

Good people –- Republicans and Democrats –- can disagree on many issues, but there’s one thing we can all agree upon: the culture of corruption in Washington, D.C., has to end before it causes grave damage to our country.

That’s why Pete McCloskey and Tom Benigno –- as well as Jerry’s Democratic primary opponents Steve Filson and Steve Thomas -– have endorsed McNerney for Congress.

Pete McCloskey endorses Jerry McNerney!

Today, Jerry McNerney received the endorsement of former Republican Congressman Pete McCloskey.

On the same night that Jerry won the Democratic primary overwhelmingly, Pete McCloskey received almost a third of the vote against Richard Pombo in the Republican primary in the 11th Congressional District. These are moderate Republicans who are fed up with Pombo's corruption and his extreme positions on issues important to Americans.

"Jerry McNerney is an honorable man that has not and will not seek to enrich himself and his family through his office," said McCloskey. McCloskey also blasted Pombo for being corrupt, tied to Big Oil and a danger to the environment.

Jerry is very excited about the news.

"I am very pleased to have Pete join us in our effort to defeat Richard Pombo and restore ethics, honesty and integrity to the people’s house," said McNerney.

McNerney requests Pombo move stalled wilderness bills and stop "playing election year politics"

Jerry McNerney, commenting on Richard Pombo finally moving the long-stalled Northern California Coastal Wild Heritage Wilderness Act though the House Resources Committee yesterday, urged Mr. Pombo to not "play election-year politics" and promptly move a similar wilderness bill through his Committee without further delay.

This new bill, the Eastern Sierra Rural Heritage and Economic Enhancement Act, would designate just over 40,000 acres of land near Yosemite National Park as federally-protected wilderness and would also grant snowmobilers guaranteed access to some of their favorite recreational areas near Sonora Pass. This carefully-crafted compromise bill, sponsored by Rep. Buck McKeon (R-CA), enjoys strong bi-partisan support.

"While it's gratifying to see the Coastal wilderness bill finally make it out of Mr. Pombo's Committee, he needs to act on the Sierra wilderness bill now and not on a timeline designed to benefit his slick yet very deceptive political campaign," said challenger Jerry McNerney. "It shouldn't take an election year to get Mr. Pombo to take action on these kinds of bills -- indeed, he stalled passage of the Coastal wilderness bill for several years. Now all of a sudden, in a desperate election year attempt to color himself green, he's finally decided to act."

McNerney for Congress pointed out that Pombo, who is widely known to be hostile to wilderness and who has even advocated the extreme position of selling off publicly-owned land for development and mining, has bottled up two other bi-partisan wilderness bills in his Resources Committee: the Caribbean National Forest Wilderness Act (S. 2334) and the Wild Sky Wilderness Act (S. 822).

For example, the Wild Sky Wilderness Act would protect important salmon habitat in Washington state and has twice passed the U.S. Senate. The bill is strongly supported by several former governors of Washington, many members of Congress from Washington, and local mayors and state representatives from both parties. Numerous Republicans endorsed the proposal, including state Sen. Bill Finkbeiner, state Sen. Jim Horn, former Gov. Dan Evans, former Gov. John Spellman and former Congressman Sid Morrison. Even the Bush Administration supported passage of the bill, and still -- the legislation has never gotten past Pombo's Resource's Committee. Pombo is the powerful Chairman of this Committee, having been hand-picked for the post by the disgraced former Majority Leader Tom DeLay.

"Maybe we'll finally see some movement on all three of these wilderness bills that Mr. Pombo has stalled, some for several years," said McNerney. "After all, his handlers have the difficult job of deceptively trying to put a thin coat of green paint on the most anti-environmental member of Congress."

McNerney continued: "The citizens of this district don't need a corrupt Congressman who holds the passage of important legislation hostage to the whims of lobbyists -- they need a Congressman willing to work hard every day in a spirit of bi-partisanship and compromise. I salute all the citizens, as well as the Republican and Democratic members of California's Congressional delegation who help craft and support these bills, for all of their hard work and tremendous effort to move them past a reluctant Committee Chairman. And I assure them that when I'm elected I won't be playing these kinds of games."

McNerney: Pombo, Bush wrong on stem cell research veto

Jerry McNerney today sided with the vast majority of Americans who want to expand federal funding for stem cell research after President Bush cast his first veto to block the enabling legislation. Rep. Richard Pombo sided with Bush to disallow such funding, which top medical researchers think has the potential to cure diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

“President Bush and Richard Pombo are on the wrong side of this issue,” said McNerney. “Pombo’s position on stem cell research is anti-science and anti-patient, striking a huge blow against the hopes of Americans with debilitating diseases.”

“This is another example of Pombo defying the scientific community and working against the best interests of the American people,” McNerney said. “Richard Pombo is out-of-touch with Californians and the people of our district who are counting on stem cell research to save lives.”

When elected to Congress, Jerry McNerney will support the research community with the funding and the tools they need to defeat terrible diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

“On this life-and-death issue important to most Americans, Richard Pombo and President Bush are frankly wrong,” said McNerney. “The American people deserve leaders who will do the right thing.”

Jerry joins Al Franken on Air America!

Jerry McNerney will be joining Al Franken live on Air America between 10 and 10:30 a.m. this Friday morning!

This just won't be any appearance. Jerry is  joining Al in San Diego at a special broadcast set up for DemocracyFest -- the third annual celebration of grassroots political organizing inspired by Howard Dean's presidential campaign. Hundreds of energized citizens from the grassroots and netroots will join dozens of national political and opinion leaders this weekend in San Diego for "education by day, celebration by night."

DemocracyFest is loosely associated with Democracy for America -- the national organization founded by Dean that just endorsed Jerry (with your votes!) with the coveted 2006 DFA "Grassroots All-Star" honor.

Al Franken will open DemocracyFest with a live broadcast of "The Al Franken Show" coast to coast on Air America Radio from San Diego State University. Jerry will be interviewed live during the 10 to 10:30 a.m. block, Pacific Standard Time.

Mr. McNerney goes to Washington

As you may know, Jerry McNerney decided to run for public office because his son -- who joined the military in response to 9/11 -- asked him to stand up against Richard Pombo. Jerry, a conscientious citizen who could not sit by as Pombo ran unopposed, ran for Congress because he felt a sense of duty to his son and to his country.

Much to the surprise of the pundits and power-brokers, Jerry is now leading Pombo in the polls (46 to 42 percent, according to Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research) and has an excellent shot to defeat him in November. But first, he needs to raise a significant amount of money to compete on the air (TV and radio ads) and on the ground (neighbor-to-neighbor field organizing).

Independence Day

Today is a day of celebration and a day of remembrance.

It is a day of parades, barbeques, beaches, family and fireworks. It is also a day to cherish the values we hold dear as Americans and to appreciate the sacrifices many generations have given to make this day possible.

I want to wish you a Happy July 4th. If you have a moment on this festive occasion to reflect on the meaning of Independence Day, please read the following passage beneath my signature. It was written 230 years ago and is quite a powerful reminder of what it means to be an American.

WHEN in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume, among the Powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

WE hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. McNerney calls on Senate to defeat Pombo-backed offshore drilling bill

In an extensive press release today, Jerry McNerney called on the Senate to defeat the Richard Pombo-backed bill to drill off California’s coast and called it “reckless,” “short-sighted,” and “fiscally irresponsible.”

McNerney sharply criticized the U.S. House of Representatives for passing a bill yesterday that will not solve the nation’s energy problems, but will put more carbon into the atmosphere and place California’s precious coastline at risk of contamination and spills. McNerney is challenging Richard Pombo, one of the bill’s leading proponents, in the race for Congress to represent California’s 11th Congressional District.

“The bottom line is that we cannot drill our way to energy independence, and we can not continue to ignore the very real problem of global warming,” said McNerney. “As sea levels rise, the risk of levee failure and catastrophic flooding in the Delta increases greatly, and salt water intrusion promises to wreak havoc with local farmers and land values in the district. Pombo’s plan is not a sensible energy plan for our nation or this district.”

In addition, the vast majority of Californians do not want oil or gas drilling off of their coastline, rightfully believing that to jeopardize the number one tourist attraction in the state would be serious folly. A February 2006 poll by the respected Public Policy Institute of California revealed that 2 out of 3 Californians oppose any off-shore drilling whatsoever, including 46% of the state’s Republicans.

“Once again, you have to wonder just who it is that Mr. Pombo is representing  in Congress. While gas prices were soaring in the spring, he was jetting down to Houston to attend a posh fundraiser held by oil industry lobbyists,” said McNerney. “And now, with gas prices still over $3 per gallon and district families and commuters still hurting, we have Pombo recklessly disregarding the opinions of the vast majority of the citizens of this state as he tries to pay back his big money contributors"
